Meet...Mark Gilman

Mark tells us a little bit about himself and his role in the business.

Name: Mark Gilman
Role: Senior Broker Development Manager Yorkshire & North East, Close Brothers Business Finance
Length of time with business: Four years

1. Briefly explain your role

My role generally revolves around ensuring my introducers are aware of all that Close Brothers has to offer in terms of products and any new developments. I spend most of my working week meeting introducers and their customers to understand their businesses and their future aspirations; understanding their requirements and ultimately completing credit applications to underwriters to assist with the project funding. Given my years in the finance industry, I also provide general guidance, advice and assistance to introducers and their customers.

2. What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the variety the role brings. No two days are the same and each customer is different with a unique set of needs and aspirations. I love going out to meet customers, putting a deal in place that works for them and working through the deal with the customer to drawdown – the buzz on completion of any deal you have worked on makes it all worthwhile. It would also be remiss of me not to mention my fantastic colleagues in all areas of the business, professionally they are all experts in their own field and together we make a team that takes some beating.  Away from the office, let’s just say we have some good nights out!

3. How would you describe your work ethic?

I come from a sporting background and coach kids using Gary Player’s mantra “The harder you work, the luckier you get” – I believe this to be true but this needs to be balanced with “work smarter not harder” and I’m still trying to achieve the right balance – despite my years in the sector, you never stop learning.

4. If you could be an animal what would you be and why?

Not a question I often consider but I guess I’d be a dolphin for their natural intelligence (ahem!), grace and protective nature, plus of course how much fun would it be to fly out of the sea and dive back in whenever you want?

5. If you weren’t in work now, what would you be doing?

My dream for years (and I admit even a little bit now) has always been to have a beach bar and maybe 100 sunbeds somewhere hot. Hiring out the beds for 5 euros for the day and beer, cocktails, snacks and music throughout the day and night – that’s the life!

6. Which of your colleagues would you like to nominate to feature next in meet the team and why?

Matt Nordan from our New Business team. I’ve worked closely with Matt recently on a large deal and his can do attitude and enthusiasm are contagious. Compiler of ad hoc quizzes and panache for fancy dress, Matt is also the sole male in the New Business team so I’m sure he has a skin thick enough to cope with this!
