Meet the Expert: Carly Chaloner

Carly Chaloner is a Business Support Advisor within the Construction and Recycling team. Here she shares what her current role involves and her goals for 2022.

What did you do before you worked for Close Brothers?

I studied History and Economics at Cardiff University. After graduating in 2011 I stayed in Cardiff for a further two years working at both the DVLA head office and a medical legal agency.

In 2014 I went travelling for 10 months, from backpacking around South East Asia to road trips across Australia, New Zealand and the USA. On returning to the UK I joined Close Brothers in 2015.

What does your current role involve?

I work within the Business Support department in Chester working specifically on the Construction and Recycling team. As a department we support the sales team in progressing deals from initial sign up to completion.

This involves completing relevant checks and searches, ensuring the documentation received is completed correctly, ensuring the information provided is accurate and collating any missing paperwork. Once I have received all of the required information, I progress the deal through our internal systems and ensure accurate and prompt payment to the relevant parties.

What aspect of your role do you find the most enjoyable?

I enjoy all aspects of my role and I think that is really down to the people I work with. I work directly with two great teams, the Business Support team and the southern Construction & Recycling sales team. The last couple of years have been challenging for most people but this has just improved the relationship amongst the teams and led to a greater understanding of the pressures and dynamics of both teams.

I particularly like problem solving, each deal brings its own complications and can involve liaising with a number of different people and departments to complete it. Having a good working relationship with the team, you learn people’s strengths and know who to liaise with to resolve these issues promptly.

What aspect of your role do you find most challenging?

Working with both an office and sales team, managing the expectations of both can be challenging. It can be difficult to navigate between the different targets and deadlines between the two, especially when there are larger, more complicated or time critical deals, such as Euro payments and multi settlements. This is particularly challenging at busy periods within the month, knowing this has a knock-on effect for customers, suppliers, dealers and internal sales staff.

From a work perspective, what are your goals for 2022?

I am currently studying towards my ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification and have so far passed six exams, Taxation being the most recent. I have three applied skills exams remaining and will continue to work towards these this year before progressing onto the strategic professional examinations.
