Marine Finance

Close Brothers Asset Finance are one of the leading providers of marine finance, offering fast, tailor-made finance to our customers, combined with more than 20 years of experience financing a wide range of vessels, including superyachts and commercial boats

We offer finance, including loans and marine mortgages, for a wide variety of sailing yachts and motorboats, including those that are used for charter

We have been in existence for over four decades after first opening our doors in 1976. The business initially focused on aviation finance, expanding into marine finance over 20 years ago. Since entering the marine market, our team has helped customers purchase hundreds of vessels for use in the UK and Europe.

Why choose Close Brothers Aviation and Marine?

Just as no two businesses are the same, neither are asset finance providers. With us, it’s the combination of our people, products, and principles that make the difference. Close Brothers Aviation and Marine are part of Close Brothers, a leading UK merchant banking group providing lending, deposit taking, wealth management services and securities trading. Close Brothers Group employ over 3000 people, principally in the UK and are listed on the London stock exchange.

Leisure marine

We can finance motor or sail yachts - with a minimum loan of £65,000 - based in the UK, ranging from smaller day boats to family cruisers. Unfortunately we cannot offer finance for residential, liveaboard or narrow boats. We can also finance vessels based in the Mediterranean, providing the boats or yachts have a UK owner and are valued in excess of £500,000.

Superyachts

Since 2007, we have become a leading provider of flexible and discreet finance for superyachts, normally valued at up to £20 million. Superyachts we finance are typically over 30 metres in length and are usually registered on the British, Cayman Islands or Maltese registers.

Commercial marine

We finance British registered commercial vessels, offering specialist services across a broad range of marine sectors. We can provide lending and finance for wind farm support vessels, powered barges, tug boats, work boats and other commercial vessels valued up to £20 million.

Our people

As you would expect, our people are experts in marine finance. With decades of experience, our team really understand the complexities of buying and owning a yacht. You can rely on them to be a consistent and proactive point of contact, on hand throughout the life of the finance contract and beyond, building lasting relationships. Our people are passionate about the marine industry and have a deep understanding of both our customers needs and the complexities of yacht ownership. We are active members of the British Marine Federation and Superyacht UK.

Our products

We don’t provide standard financing, loan or mortgage packages, we consider all relevant aspects of your operation and then create tailor made, flexible repayment schedules to suit. Our asset finance enables you to invest in new vessels or refinance existing vessels to make them work harder for you. We do not need an existing bank relationship, nor do we need to take assets under management. Our typical minimum advance is £65,000.

Our principles

We are committed to helping our marine customers make the right financial decisions. We base our marine lending decisions on the overall financial health and plans for the ownership of the vessel – not just a credit rating. But we’re careful lenders too, a decision that fails to take account of risk factors is not in anyone’s interest.

Marine mortgages and registration

Finance facilities are structured by way of a marine mortgage over the vessel and we register the mortgage with the relevant marine authority.

We require UK vessels to be registered on Part 1 of the UK Ship Register and work closely with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) to assist boat and yacht owners with the registration process. This process helps protect your ownership interest and can also provide valuable protection against fraud. In addition to assisting with the Part 1 registration process, we check that the vessel title paperwork meets MCA registration requirements. If a vessel is already Part 1 registered, we request a Transcript of Registry from the MCA to confirm if there are any existing mortgages registered over the vessel.

When lending to companies and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) we register a mortgage with Companies House. Appropriate guarantees and facility fees normally apply with this financing.
