Discover Cameron’s journey as he transitions from young subcontractor to success as a primary contractor, using our tailored finance solutions to expand his fleet and meet the demands of a growing contract

Customer background

Cameron Dalrymple has been working in farming since he was 16. For the past seven years he’s been a sole trader, subcontracting as a tractor driver to John Giblin and Son and working on a contract for a large supermarket vegetable producer in Fife, Scotland.

His work consists mainly of parsnip harvesting, however, potato, turnip and early carrots are also common. In addition, Cameron takes on grain, bailing and any other farm work required.

When Cameron decided it was time to start his own venture, Jon Giblin and Son wanted to support him. They decided to sell their tractor (a CASE Puma 240) to Cameron and offered him the harvesting side of the contract with the vegetable producer. His reliability and strong work ethic meant the supplier was happy with this transition.

Expanding the fleet

When Hamilton Rankine, Area Sales Manager at Close Brothers Asset Finance, met with Cameron, he immediately saw his drive and ambition, and quickly structured an affordable Hire Purchase deal for the tractor. Helpfully, the farm manager at John Giblin and Son wrote Cameron a strong reference because he had only a few years as a sole trader behind him and no Hire Purchase payment history.

After six months, Cameron approached Hamilton again for funding for another CASE Puma 240 after the contract expanded. He lost out on two tractors before Hamilton noticed one for sale and referred this to Cameron, who then immediately went to see the machine. This resulted in a second CASE tractor and Hire Purchase agreement and VAT deferral.

"Close Brothers Asset Finance has been a crucial partner in my journey."

A bright future ahead

Cameron's journey from subcontractor to primary contractor is a testament to his entrepreneurial determination. With the backing of his family and the support of Close Brothers Asset Finance, Cameron is well-positioned to continue growing his business and meeting the demands of his expanding contracts.
