Meet the Expert: Matthew Wheeler, Corporate Sales Manager
Briefly tell us about your role and what you do…
I am a Corporate Sales Manager for the Wimbledon Transport Division. My day to day involves providing tailored Asset Finance solutions to companies looking to invest in or raise capital for wheeled assets. I work predominately in London and the South, where I support both SME and mid-corporate customers in the transport sector. There are a range of vehicles we can look to fund such as cars, HGVs and coaches – as long as it has wheels we are keen to talk.
What was your journey to Close Brothers Asset Finance?
I have 20 years of experience in the Asset Finance industry. I’ve worked with businesses of all sizes, from SMEs to large corporates, primarily in Relationship Manager and Sales roles. Over this period, the Asset Finance landscape has undergone significant transformation, marked by increased competition. However, I thrive in this dynamic environment, finding it both exhilarating and rewarding.
What’s your favourite part of the role?
While it may sound cliché, the people truly make this role exceptional. Everyone I’ve encountered shares a genuine vested interest in our customers’ success and the prosperity of the business. From Sales to Risk, Customer Support, and Collections—every team member contributes to our collective mission. Since joining Close Brothers Asset Finance, I’ve often used the word “refreshing” to describe their approach.
Unlike others, Close Brothers Asset Finance view deals through a unique lens—one that combines a genuine desire to assist and support our customers. They believe in a straightforward, practical approach to Asset Finance, avoiding unnecessary complexity.
Outside of work, how do you like to spend your time?
Outside of work my time is taken up a lot by my two daughters who are as active as myself when I was younger! Occasionally, I indulge in a game of veteran’s football, but only when the knees permit. I’ve recently taken up golf, I use the term “playing” loosely – it’s more attempting. Thankfully, I’m situated an hour from both London and the coastline, which means my free time is frequently divided between the two.
What assets have you found are the most ‘in demand’ at the moment?
This is a tough question to answer as we operate in many different sub sectors within transport. Over the past few years, the scarcity of certain more popular manufacturers has prompted our customers to explore alternative options. However, we are now witnessing increased availability of vehicles in the market. This trend may lead to more competitive prices and encourage customers to make strategic investments in their fleets.
What do you think 2024 holds for the transport industry?
Looking ahead to 2024, the transport industry faces undeniable challenges. With high interest rates and global events impacting our shores, the haulage and logistics sector faces direct repercussions. However, my outlook remains positive. From an Asset Finance perspective I can see a positive trend: with more companies opting for financing solutions that allow them to retain the cash reserves within their businesses.
